Nuwara Eliya “Little England” – A Paradise for Trekkers

Breath taking Panoramic views of the high mountain range, amazing Flora, Fauna and Beautiful Waterfalls all within a few hours range from the tropical seashore makes this Paradise City a dream for Nature lovers.

Situated at an altitude of 6182ft above sea level and with an average temperature ranging from 14°C to 20°C makes it famous for its cool climate. Economically sustained by Agriculture, Horticulture, Tea Plantations and Tourism, the vast Tea Estates and Colonial Buildings of a bygone era are the major attractions.

Queen Victoria Park: Established to commemorate the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1897 is situated at the heart of the city. A place to see varieties of flowers and plants imported from England. Also the park is reputed for the many rare breeds of Birds frequenting this beautiful garden.

Hakgala Botanical Garden: Situated at the foot of the Hakgala Mountain range (Thus the name “Hakgala”) is famous for its Endemic plants and flowers. This park also plays host to many imported valuable plants and flowers too.

Horton Plains National Park: Reputed for being the only National park situated within the Wet zone and the only valley situated at the highest elevation in Sri Lanka. Situated at an altitude of 1800 – 2300 feet above sea level and with a land area 3159.8 Hectares filled with 744 species of flowers of which 112 are endemic and 78 species are endangered. As it is a Grassland, it consists of more than 50 species of Grass, most of which are endangered. There are 460 species of birds of which 33 are endemic. Apart from these many species of reptiles, amphibians and butterflies could be seen in this National Park.

Randenigala & Rantambe Sanctuaries: This Sanctuary hosts many varieties of mammals including endemics species. Its High grade road networks makes it the ideal place to watch Elephants and other animals in their natural habitat

Galways Land Bird Sanctuary: It is the only Bird Sanctuary, situated close to the city. As its name suggests, it is a sanctuary for many endemic and migrant bird species.

Waterfalls: Waterfalls are in abundance in Nuwara Eliya, ranging from all sizes and the beauty of each is unique, captivating the admiration of any person to set eyes on any of them. Here are the names of few of the many waterfalls in Nuwara Eliya.

Sight Seeing : Apart from the above, there are many other sights on offer in Nuwara Eliya. One could always visit the Dairy Farms situated in Ambewela. The Tea Factories are also a good place to have a look at, some of them have the old Machines and will gladly show ant Tourists how they used to make tea in the “old” days. Visiting old Temples and Churches to see some of the very old gravestones is also a popular sight.

Rafting : Anyone who would like to feel Adrenaline rushing through their bodies, then rafting at Kithulagala is the place for you. The White waters can sometimes be unpredictable, so be ready to face the unexpected!
